The nongovernmental organization EarthRights International recently announced it is supporting a lawsuit in the names of a group of Colorado communities against Suncor and ExxonMobil to force these energy companies to cover costs these communities expect to incur over the next three decades to deal with impacts of these companies' contributions to global warming.

NGO Sues to Force Florida Climate Action

The Miami Herald reports that, as part of a growing, global movement seeking to use the judiciary to force government officials and businesses to address climate change, an Oregon-based organization has filed a lawsuit on behalf of children in Florida seeking to force Governor Rick Scott to adopt a "Climate Recovery Plan" cutting back on carbon emissions in the state.

Massachusetts Court Permits Demand for Exxon Records

Illustrating the progression of a set of US state investigations against energy companies over global warming, Reuters reports that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently ruled that the state's Attorney General has jurisdiction to demand private records from Exxon to determine whether the company misled consumers regarding the risks of climate change.

FIFA Creates Human Rights Complaint Mechanism

Acting on recommendations from nongovernmental organizations and its Human Rights Advisory Board, the International Federation for Association Football (FIFA) has created a complaints mechanism through which "human rights defenders" and media representatives can anonymously report rights violations related to FIFA's activities.
