Global Unions Force $2.3 Million Factory Safety Settlement

Two global union groups have announced that they have secured a $2.3 million settlement from a multinational clothing brand in the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague to enhance factory safety in Bangladesh under the terms of a global agreement signed by apparel companies in response to the 2013 Rana Plaza factory disaster in the country.

NGO Pushes Mandatory Climate Reporting in Sweden

A report from the nongovernmental organization Swedwatch warns Swedish fund managers that they are failing to invest enough in climate-friendly projects to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris climate accord and calls on the Swedish government to introduce a law requiring finance actors to publicly disclose their efforts toward a greener portfolio.

UN Group Pushes WEF to Focus on Rights Agenda

The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (BHR) has called on governments and businesses convening in Davos for the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to work toward a "fairer economic system that spreads the rewards of economic development to all" and to base their strategic decisions on the global human rights agenda.

NGO Criticizes Removal of Countries from EU Tax "Blacklist"

The nongovernmental organization Oxfam has criticized EU finance ministers for their decision to remove eight countries from the bloc's "blacklist" scrutinizing jurisdictions viewed as corporate tax havens, calling for more transparency on reasons behind removing such countries from the list and pushing for the inclusion of low-tax EU countries on the list.

GRI Series Targets "Sustainability" Reporting in Food Industry

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and a group of civil society and academic partners have launched a Materiality Roundtable Series to guide businesses and investors on how to properly report and evaluate their impacts on "sustainable development" in the food and agriculture sectors.
