UN Agent Seeks Business Pressure Against Forced Labor

UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons Maria Grazia Giammarinaro published a report in June calling on businesses to place pressure on their global suppliers to end forced labor practices and pushing countries to replace voluntary standards on such practices for businesses with government-backed "enhanced collaboration" mechanisms.

Paper Calls for Financial Platform for Climate Reporting

A paper from the Centre for International Governance Innovation calls for Canadian financial institutions to "step into the breach" created by the inaction of the Group of 20 countries (G20) on global warming by helping to create a new international platform for cooperation on the reporting of "climate-related financial risk and green finance opportunities."

ISO Updates Standard on Clean Energy

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) organized a workshop at the intergovernmental Clean Energy Ministerial in June to update and strengthen its global standard on energy management systems pressuring businesses and other organizations to pursue action on climate change by reducing their energy use.

NGOs Push for Human Rights Reform in Trade Deals

The International Corporate Accountability Roundtable and the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations have published a paper calling for the reform of the "investor-state dispute settlement" system model, present in nearly all modern trade deals, to provide for accountability under the global human rights and environmental agendas.
