France Plans Tax Increase on Coal-Fired Plants

As governments move to meet their greenhouse gas emissions pledges under the recent UN climate deal, Reuters reports that French Environment Minister Segolene Royal has announced her approval of a recommendation from a government advisory committee to impose higher taxes or more stringent emissions standards on coal-fired power plants in the country.

EU, Korea Establish Joint Carbon Tax Scheme

As part of a move to globalize its efforts to counter climate change, the EU is working with South Korea to ramp up the latter's efforts to impose a price on corporate greenhouse gas emissions in order to drastically reduce these emissions in both the EU and Korea by the year 2019.

John FitzGerald of the Irish Climate Change Advisory Council writes that the body has advised the Irish government to support a "floor" price for EU carbon emissions permits that would essentially impose a minimum tax for companies emitting greenhouse gases throughout the EU.

EU Proposal Expands Disclosure on Corporate Taxes

CCH Daily describes proposals from the European Commission that will require companies to disclose to EU member states their "beneficial ownership" of companies that could be used for tax avoidance and that will place pressure on so-called "tax havens" outside the EU to implement global standards on corporate taxation.
