NGO Pushes Aggressive Tax Policy in Latin America

The nongovernmental organization Center for Economic and Social Rights recently hosted an event at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights during which UN representatives and others called on Latin American countries to pursue anti-tax avoidance policies for corporations and wealthy individuals to fund the realization of economic, social, and cultural rights.

Oxfam Economist Letter Calls for G-7 Tax Haven Action

In the lead-up to a recent meeting in Japan of leaders from the "Group of 7" countries, nongovernmental organization Oxfam released a letter signed by 47 Japanese economists calling for G-7 representatives to counter businesses' use of "tax havens," which the letter asserts "are distorting the working of the global economy."

GRI Creates Digital Reporting Platform

Seeking to provide an integrated system through which researchers can analyze the reporting of companies on their implementation of the UN's social and environmental goals, the Global Reporting Initiative has launched an initiative called the Digital Reporting Alliance that will form a platform for companies to file digital "sustainability" reports.

EU Governments Call for BHR "Duty of Care" Legislation

A group of NGOs have applauded EU governments for calling on the European Commission to develop a proposal imposing a legal "duty of care" on European businesses that would require them to consider the impacts of their operations on individuals and communities outside the bloc.
