Governments Seek More Ambitious EU Climate Goals

Government officials from the “Green Growth Group,” an initiative of 16 EU member states seeking to “make EU climate policy more ambitious and sustainable,” have called on the European Commission to develop a strong strategy to fulfill the UN’s Paris climate deal and prepare ambitious greenhouse gas emissions goals prior to the next UN climate summit.

EU Official Rejects UK Post-Brexit Customs Plan

The Independent reports that the European Commission’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has rejected the latest UK proposal for a post-Brexit customs partnership with the EU, asserting the EU cannot delegate to the UK the collection of customs duties unless Britain remains part of an EU customs union.

UK Committee Seeks EU-Style Environmental Watchdog

The Guardian reports that the UK Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee has called for the establishment after Brexit of an Environmental Enforcement and Audit Office to assess environmental impacts of legislation and to continue the strict enforcement of environmental standards currently implemented by the European Commission.

UK Official Threatens to Hold Back EU “Divorce” Payment

Business Insider reports that UK Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has threatened to withhold funds from the EU as part of the agreed Brexit “divorce bill” if the EU and UK fail to strike a trade deal during negotiations over Britain’s withdrawal from the bloc.
