Hungary, Poland Push for Larger Voice in EU

Reuters reports that, at a recent joint news conference, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki asserted that the EU's "failed" policy of migration quotas "infringes on sovereign decisions of member states" and called for "a strong say" for the national governments of Central and Eastern Europe in EU governance.

EU Bodies Agree to Broad Climate Targets for 2030

European Commission officials recently welcomed as a new step toward the EU's 2030 climate policy framework an agreement between the European Parliament and Council to a broad-reaching "effort sharing regulation" that will seek to reduce carbon emissions in "transport, buildings, waste and agriculture" across the EU by 30 percent.

As part of its efforts toward a European Pillar of Social Rights, the European Commission (EC) has proposed a directive mandating "more transparent and predictable working conditions across the EU" by requiring more corporate disclosures to employees on working conditions and new minimum standards for workers, including those working under "atypical contracts."

CoE Chief Seeks Review of Romanian Judicial Reforms

Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland has published a letter to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis calling for the country's authorities to seek advice from the CoE's constitutional body the Venice Commission on the compliance of a set of proposed reforms to the judiciary with "fundamental rule of law standards."
