Dissenting UK Justices Object to Involvement in Brexit

The Telegraph reports that the three UK Supreme Court Justices who dissented from the Court's decision this week that the British Government cannot formally notify the EU of its intent to leave without a vote from Parliament asserted that it was up to Parliament, and not the courts, to shape its role in the "political process" involved in Brexit negotiations.

CoE Chief Consults on EU "Social Rights" Plans

In his opinion welcoming the development by EU institutions of a European Pillar of Social Rights, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Thorbjørn Jagland calls on EU officials to incorporate within this Pillar the CoE's European Social Charter, which seeks to guarantee nontraditional social and economic "human rights" throughout Europe.

UK Court: Parliament Must Trigger Brexit Process

The UK Supreme Court has held that, despite the outcome of a referendum held in June 2016 in which voters opted to leave the EU, constitutional principles do not permit the British Government to initiate negotiations on the country's exit from the EU without parliamentary approval.

ECtHR Finds Faulty Court Interpretation of Criminal Law

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has held that Slovenian courts violated the human rights of a prisoner by failing to properly resolve a legislative mistake in a criminal sentencing law, effectively reducing the prisoner's sentence by ten years, to the advantage of the prisoner.

Australia Announces Trade Talks with UK

Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison has announced that Australia and the UK will begin "preparatory" talks this week on the development of a free trade deal between the countries that will enter into force following the UK's departure from the EU.
