EU Official Proposes Visa-Free Travel for Ukrainians

Following a Dutch referendum in which voters rejected an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU, European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos has called for the adoption of visa-free travel for Ukrainian nationals throughout the passport-free Schengen area.

Norwegian Court Finds ECHR Violation in Mass Killer's Confinement

A Norwegian district court has held that national authorities violated the European Convention on Human Rights' ("ECHR") prohibition against "inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" for the conditions of mass killer Anders Breivik's solitary confinement in prison and, as a result, has ordered the state to pay Breivik's legal fees.

UK Security Officials Warn of "Porous" Borders

The Telegraph reports that a group of former UK security and law enforcement officials has warned that, regardless of the outcome of the country's referendum on the EU, Britain must implement better border security practices in order to prevent the entry of Muslim extremists from other EU members.

Auditors: EU Must Strictly Enforce Deficit Targets

The European Court of Auditors has published a report asserting that the European Commission is "not strict enough" in enforcing the bloc's Excessive Deficit Procedure, which provides for a procedure through which the Commission oversees the lowering of national deficit levels that, according to EU law, have become too high.

EU Leaders Seek Clampdown on Aviation, Shipping Emissions

The rotating EU Presidency, currently held by the Netherlands, recently held a meeting of the Transport and Environment Council in Amsterdam where ministers of EU member states discussed strategies to work collectively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation and shipping industries in line with the UN climate deal agreed in December.
