CoE Warns UK on Bill of Rights Process

Following a recent visit to Scotland, the Council of Europe's ("CoE") Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks warned the UK that its process of developing a Bill of Rights to replace the country's Human Rights Act, which implements the European Convention on Human Rights in British law, is creating "an atmosphere of anxiety and concern" in the country.

EU Seeks Expanded Authority in Auto Industry

Politico reports that, in the wake of admissions from the Volkswagen car company that it masked its vehicles' emissions to circumvent EU and national rules, a European Commission proposal would significantly expand EU authority in the car industry, including by permitting EU officials to perform "spot checks" of vehicle emissions and de-certify inspection centers.

Report Confirms ECB Pressure on Ireland over Banks

According to The Irish Times, a report prepared by a cross-party committee in Ireland has found that the European Central Bank ("ECB") pressured national officials to bail out Irish banks using taxpayer funds rather than imposing losses on senior bondholders during the country's financial crisis in 2011.
