CoE Official Opposes Refugee Family Restrictions

Arguing that "simply playing the numbers game" in migration policy "is short-sighted," the Council of Europe's (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks has issued a report arguing that family reunification restrictions for refugees "are often incompatible with the letter or spirit of human rights standards" and calling for litigation to address "unnecessary" restrictions.

UK Court Rules on Dana Gas Sharia Bonds

In a widely watched case in the global Islamic finance industry, the UK High Court determined that UAE energy giant Dana Gas must repay $700 million of Islamic bonds to creditors, setting a legal precedent in rejecting the Dana Gas claims that new interpretations of sharia law trumped repayment obligations on the outstanding debt.
