Since the Taliban Islamist regime has taken over Afghanistan there has been a sharp deterioration in human rights conditions, especially for women and ethnic-religious minorities, creating geopolitical opportunities for influence-building by human rights violators such as China and Russia and leading Western observers to speculate whether the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) may be able to influence the Taliban to soften its Islamist extremism by adhering to the OIC’s Independent Permanent Commission on Human Rights.
