Partnering to Strengthen Public Governance: The Leadership Challenge for CEOs and Boards
The sponsors of this report (World Economic Forum Global Corporate Citizenship Initiative in partnership with Business for Social Responsibility, Accountability, Harvard university John F. Kennedy School of Government, and International Business leaders Forum) present the case for moving beyond corporate social responsibility to corporate global citizenship. The report acknowledges that, over the past several years, the business community has devoted considerable attention to corporate responsibility, “bringing a spirit of innovation and partnership to address significant social and environmental questions with value for business and society.” However, the report explains that “the time is right to build on recent progress and make a more systematic impact” that focuses on addressing root causes of social ills. The report outlines an approach to corporate global citizenship, with a focus on business engagement to promote more effective public governance. According to the report, public governance includes the fair and efficient workings of traditional public functions, including setting and enforcing rules and regulations, delivery of public goods, development of guidelines for the smooth working of global trade, operating principles for public-private partnerships (PPPs) and additional means of promoting collaborative solutions to public questions.
